August 2018

A colourful Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens) who thinks the small amount of grass is hiding him!

A Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon) basking on a fallen dead tree above crystal clear waters

A Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) popping out from the background!

A small Mushroom growing from a fallen log in the woods

Under the dappled canopy of the forest this little Eastern Wood Pewee (Contopus virens) could be seen singing his little heart out

Usually it’s annoying when your camera auto focuses away from your subject (in this case it had been a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker), but when it ends up focusing on a tiny little female Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) that’s sitting right in front of you then it’s not so bad!

A Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) peering out from the Staghorn Sumacs (Rhus typhina)

Water droplets on White Oak (Quercus alba) leaves after a thunderstorm

A quintessential scene from Canadian cottage country, Common Loon (Gavia immer) included!

An adult female Blandings Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) that my brother and I found while out doing fieldwork. After being notched, weighed, and measured she watched us for a while and gave us an opportunity for a little photoshoot!

Even this tiny Cedar twig is a great perch for this small Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus)

First signs of the coming autumn showing on these Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) leaves

A White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis arthemis) feeding on nectar

Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) in full flower

Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra) lit up by the warm evening rays of sun in the Sortedamssøen of København

A Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) perched along Nyhavn canal, Copenhagen. If you swipe across you can see the colours of the old 17th and 18th century buildings in the background

A Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) coming in for landing in the heart of København in the Sortedamssøen

A Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) preening in the centre of København. It was exciting to be able to see these elegant birds each day and as close as we did!

Meandering through the grassy dunes bordering the Baltic Sea is a Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix)

A Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) flying out on the open water in the Western Baltic as we crossed from Gedser, Denmark to Rostock, Germany

Light shining through the vines in downtown Berlin

A bright pop of colour in the heart of Berlin

A Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) feeding on the nectar, and spreading the pollen, of these flowers in the small village of Hirschfelde, just east of Berlin

A pair of Mute Swans (Cygnus olor) greeting each other on Lake Straussee in Strausberg, Germany

A Bumblebee (Bombus sp.) visiting a vibrant violet flower in the rural vilage of Hirschfelde, Germany

A male House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) surveying the landscape from his green perch.

A little out of place maybe? This Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) is likely an escapee from a nearby house or aviary. Despite being native to Australia this little Budgie seemed to be doing quite well amongst a large flock of House Sparrows in Berlins Tiergarten, right next to the Berlin Victory Column

Bright pink flowers against a deep green background

A free Little Rock Dove (Columba livia) hopping around along the edge of the Otonabee River

An appropriately named Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon) gliding around in the crystal clear waters of the lake tasting the air as she goes

Grasses (Setaria sp.) blowing in the wind on a warm summers afternoon
